On July 20th, Medellin and Colombia will be celebrating it's 200 anniversary bicentennial. The festivities started off on Monday the 19th with the biggest fireworks display in the history of the country. 2 and 1/2 tons of gunpowder was exploded over a 70 minute period, choreographed to music along a 300 yard stretch of the river front. The mayor, Alonso Salazar, started off the festivities with a speech honoring the original liberators of Colombia and was followed by the president elect Manuel Santos.
The French Company Group F was responsible for the display. They are world renowned and have performed displays at the World Cup, The Cannes Film Festival and the Paris Olympics. It was a spectacular display and well attended by over 200,000 cheering Paisas.
